About us:

The Munich Center for Machine Learning (MCML) is a joint research initiative of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) and Technische Universität München (TUM). It is one of six nationwide AI centers in Germany to receive permanent funding as part of the German and Bavarian government's AI strategy. Our vision is to strengthen regional, national, and international competence in AI and to make the corresponding potential accessible to users from science and industry.

We are looking for you:

PhD positions available at the Munich Center for Machine Learning (MCML) (m/f/x) in any field of research within the domains of machine learning

in Munich

Your tasks and responsibilities:

The MCML opens its doctoral call annually. This year, applications are accepted from 15 October to 14 November 2025. You will develop a PhD research project in a field related to one of the three research areas of MCML: Foundations of Machine Learning; Perception, Vision, and NLP; and Domain-Specific Machine Learning.

Your qualifications:

  • Master’s or equivalent graduate degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, mathematics, statistics, data science, physics or a related field from a recognized college or university. If you received your degree from a university outside of Germany, it must be equivalent to the corresponding German degree. A final decision regarding eligibility will require the approval of university officials.
  • Degree must be completed by July 1, 2026.
  • Final grade of MSc degree at least 2.3 (or overall average grade if MSc degree is yet to be awarded) when converted to the German system.
  • A very good command of the English language.
  • Strong interest in scientific pursuits.
