The Chair of Mathematical Foundations of Artificial Intelligence at LMU is part of the Mathematical Institute within the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Statistics and contributes to the Bavarian Hightech Agenda.
Our research focuses on reliable AI, including questions of expressivity, generalization, and explainability of (graph) neural networks, as well as sustainable AI, for example spiking neural networks as an energy-efficient alternative to classical neural networks. In addition, we work on mathematically grounded AI methods for inverse problems and partial differential equations, as well as AI-based approaches to learning physical laws. Applications arise, among others, in medicine, robotics, and telecommunications.
The chair is also involved in several larger initiatives at LMU and in the Munich AI ecosystem, including the AI-HUB@LMU, the Konrad Zuse School of Excellence in Reliable AI, the Munich Center for Machine Learning, and the project “Next Generation AI Computing (gAIn)”, partly in leading roles.
