About us:

The Department of Geography is a globally recognized institution with innovative approaches in sustainability science. There, the newly established Chair for Physical Geography and Nexus Research assesses the complex interactions between hydrology, food production, energy security and nature on a global and larger regional scale. Our group aims to understand, how the basic needs of humans can be met without irreversibly destroying the fundamental Earth systems. Our methodology primarily involves large-scale modeling.

We are looking for you:

Research Associate in the area of nexus research (m/f/x)

in Munich

Your tasks and responsibilities:

  • Research (see topics below) and scientific publications
  • Teaching in the Geography degree programs (five SWS)
  • Supervision of student thesis (e.g. Bachelor, master thesis)
  • Participation in academic self-administration
  • Third-party funding acquisition

Scientific topics that are interesting for us include:

  • Deforestation and its consequences for water availability and water flows
  • Land sparing versus land sharing: impacts on water availability, food production, and sustainability
  • Multifunctional management of forests
  • Trade-offs between hydropower and irrigation
  • Agri-photovoltaic systems
  • Land use conflicts between bioenergy and food production
  • Alternative agricultural practices (intercropping, organic farming, circular economy in agriculture, etc.)
  • The role of international trade in nexus interactions and environmental degradation
  • Coupling of global vegetation models and economic models (e.g. partial equilibrium models)
  • The use of machine learning for nexus research
  • Other topics of interest are welcome as long as they are relevant to nexus research
  • We generally work either with Bavaria as a regional focus or on a large regional scale (e.g. Mediterranean region, continental scale or global scale).

Your qualifications:

  • PhD
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills
  • Ability to acquire a good level in scientific programming and complex data analysis
  • German language skills are an advantage
  • Proactivity, goal-oriented thinking, reliability, organisational skills and high motivation complete your profile

Benefits:

  • A 13 TV-L position initially limited to three years and can be extended for additional three years. In civil service positions, remuneration is based on salary group A13 of the Bavarian Salary Act. If the civil service requirements are not met, remuneration is according to TV-L E13.
