Professorship (W2) (6 years/tenure track) of Dance and Performance

Candidates should embrace a broad notion of dance studies with a comprehensive reference of dance to dance theater inclusive of contemporary performance art. A focus on dance and performance studies in European and non-European practice, in curatorial practice, and/or in cultural-theoretical research as well as experience in the intersection of academic and artistic research is desired. The candidate is expected to contribute to Theater Studies at LMU Munich in teaching and research through innovative dance and performance studies perspectives and, in particular, to the excellent research at the institute through international research cooperations and third-party funding. Teaching contributions to the BA and MA degree programs in Theater Studies and other programs in which the subject is involved are part of the duties. We are therefore looking for an excellent scholar who is well-known in the international field and who will represent dance and performance in research and teaching in an outstanding manner.

The importance of Theater Studies at LMU Munich is underscored by a number of significant locational advantages: close cooperation with the Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding and the department's well-equipped studio stage offer students the opportunity for practical work. There are also numerous collaborations with Munich's diverse and internationally recognised dance and theater scene. The Professor of Dance and Performance is expected to further develop and broaden these relations to create productive cooperations at the level of research and teaching.

LMU Munich seeks to appoint a highly qualified junior academic to this professorship and, therefore, especially encourages early-career scholars to apply. Prerequisites for this position are a university degree and a doctoral degree or a comparable specific qualification. With an excellent record in research and teaching to date, prospective candidates will have demonstrated the potential for an outstanding academic career.

The initial appointment will be for six years. After a minimum of three years, it can be converted into a permanent position pending a positive evaluation of the candidate’s performance in research and teaching as well as his or her personal aptitude and if all legal conditions are met.

Under the terms of the “LMU Academic Career Program”, in exceptional cases and subject to outstanding performance in research and teaching, the position may be converted from a W2 into a W3 Full Professorship at a later date.

LMU Munich makes a point of providing newly appointed professors with various types of support, such as welcoming services and assistance for dual career couples.

LMU Munich is an equal opportunity employer. The University continues to be very successful in increasing the number of female faculty members and strongly encourages applications from female candidates. LMU Munich intends to enhance the diversity of its faculty members.

People with disabilities who are equally as qualified as other applicants will receive preferential treatment.
