About us:

The Department of Geography of the LMU is a globally recognized institution with innovative approaches in sustainability science. There, the newly established chair for physical geography and nexus research assesses the complex interactions between water security, food production, energy security and nature at the global and macro-regional level. Our group develops knowledge and tools to understand, monitor, and simulate the behaviour, features and evolution of the nexus as a complex system. In this framework, we have designed an area devoted to natural ecosystem science.

We are looking for you:

Researcher and Lecturer in the field of global terrestrial ecosystem services (Akademische Ratstelle 9 SWS) (m/f/x)

in Munich

Your tasks and responsibilities:

  • Quantify the current and future demand or need for ecosystem services (especially regulating, supporting, and provisioning)
  • Quantify and map the current and future supply of ecosystem services (especially regulating and supporting)
  • Identify current and future drivers of change and their quantitative importance for demand and supply, including demographic, economic, societal and biophysical changes
  • Assess the productivity of ecosystem services according to different management options of natural ecosystems.
  • Quantitatively analyse the consequences of anthropogenic degradation of natural ecosystems for ecosystem services (including climate change).
  • Study the resilience of natural ecosystems in regards to the stability of ecosystem services
  • Connect ecosystem services with the other areas of the nexus (water, food, energy)
  • Third-party funding acquisition
  • Management and guidance in the own group
  • Writing scientific publications
  • Teaching nexus and physical geography (9 SWS), student mentoring

Your qualifications:

  • PhD degree in Ecology, Forestry Sciences, Nature Conservation or similar
  • Strong background in quantitative assessment of ecosystem dynamics, ecosystem services or similar
  • Post-doc experience of at least two years in an area related to ecosystem sciences
  • Experience or the ability to quickly get used to work at large scale (global level)
  • Experience or the ability to quickly acquire a good level in scientific programming for large-scale modelling (e.g. C, Python, FORTRAN).
  • Experience in teaching at higher education level and mentoring students is a plus
  • Prior experience in interdisciplinary work is a plus
