About us:

The Institute of Indology and Tibetology at the Department of Asian Studies (Faculty for the Study of Culture), Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich, is a major hub of learning and research in the fields of Indian and Tibetan Studies. With three professorships and over twenty members, the Institute boasts a broad expertise in the languages, literatures, religions and philosophies of South Asia and Tibet.

We are looking for you:

Lecturer of Sanskrit (m/f/x)

in Munich

Your tasks and responsibilities:

This is a full-time “Lehrkraft für besondere Aufgaben” LfbA position commencing on 1st April 2023, which is meant to become permanent.

  • Teach up to 17 hours per week during semester times to students enrolled in the BA, MA, and doctoral programmes of the Institute of Indology and Tibetology.
  • Ensure the language acquisition of Sanskrit, from introductory to advanced levels.
  • Develop lectures and seminars on the history and literatures of premodern India.
  • Supervise and advise students.
  • Carry out administrative tasks for the Institute.

Your qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree in Indology or a related field at the time of appointment.
  • An excellent command of Sanskrit and familiarity with a broad range of Sanskrit sources.
  • A solid experience in teaching Sanskrit at university level.
  • The capacity to teach introductory Classical Tibetan is desirable, or, alternatively, the capacity to teach a second Classical Indian language other than Sanskrit.
  • German language skills are desired, but not mandatory. However, business fluency is expected one year after appointment.
  • Excellent communication skills in English.
