We are looking for you:

Doctoral thesis position: "BOTCAT: biomarkers to guide oral targeted cancer therapy” (m/f/x)

in Munich

Your tasks and responsibilities:

Cancer therapies have undergone significant changes in the last 20 years. Since the approval of Imatinib in 2001, an increasing number of targeted small molecules have found their way into cancer therapy and continue to do so. With few exceptions, these substances are administered orally and are used in various malignant diseases. However, the term "targeted" has limited validity. Most drugs have off-target effects and are associated with severe side effects, which often lead to treatment discontinuation.

Therapeutic drug monitoring can be and, in many cases, is an appropriate means to reduce the frequency and severity of side effects without compromising effectiveness. However, to achieve this, the concentration ranges to be reached must be known, which is often not the case due to the novelty of these substances. Linking measured concentrations to tumor specific biomarkers could help in defining minimal effective concentration targets for targeted therapies for treating e.g. advanced renal cell carcinoma, advanced breast cancer or adrenocortical carcinoma.

You will be responsible for the development of biomarker assays and screening for new biomarkers using techniques of molecular biology and mass spectrometry. As part of the ON-TARGET study, you will have access to a multi-disciplinary network establishing therapeutic drug monitoring for oral anti-cancer drugs in Germany.

Your qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree/Diploma/Staatsexamen in pharmacy, biochemistry, or related field
  • Hands-on skills in molecular biology (e.g. PCR, ELISA, SDS-PAGE, Electrophoresis) or bioinformatics are desirable
  • Strong written and spoken English language communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of an international team

We offer you an interesting and responsible job in a young team with a pleasant working atmosphere. Salary and benefits are according to public service positions in Germany (TV-L/50%). The planned duration of the PhD project is three years.

People with disabilities who are equally as qualified as other applicants will receive preferential treatment.
