Junior Professorship (W1) (3 years/tenure track leading to W2) of Information and Language Processing Using AI Methods

The successful candidate has shown excellence in research and teaching in the area of information and language processing using AI methods (e.g., question answering, information extraction, deep learning). The area includes all aspects of information processing in which language is the primary medium or (in multimodal scenarios) one of the primary mediums. In addition to traditional information retrieval, methods of artificial intelligence are increasingly important for satisfying information needs, e.g., when users interact with AI agents. Key research topics include question answering, information extraction, deep learning for information processing, natural language semantics, multilinguality, representation learning, algorithms for efficient search, domain adaptation, reliability and robustness. The successful candidate is also expected to take on some administrative tasks.

Prerequisites for this position are a university degree, teaching skills at university level and an aptitude for an academic career, usually evidenced by the excellent quality of a doctoral degree. No more than four years should have passed between the doctorate and the end of the application period. This period is extended by up to two years per child or nursing case if the applicant is caring or has cared for one or more children under the age of 18 or one or more relatives in need of care.

The position is a fixed-term professorship for the duration of three years. Pending a positive evaluation, the position may be extended by another period of three years. After a minimum of three years, pending a positive evaluation of the candidate’s aptitude for teaching and research as well as the candidate’s pedagogical and personal aptitude, the appointment may be converted to an indefinite W2-professorship (tenure). If the applicant was already a member of LMU Munich at the time of the appointment to a junior professorship, such a tenure option may only be exercised in exceptional cases.

Under the terms of the “LMU Academic Career Program”, in exceptional cases and subject to outstanding performance in research and teaching, the position may be converted from a W2 into a W3 Full Professorship at a later date.

LMU Munich makes a point of providing newly appointed professors with various types of support, such as welcoming services and assistance for dual career couples.

LMU Munich is an equal opportunity employer. The University continues to be very successful in increasing the number of female faculty members and strongly encourages applications from female candidates. LMU Munich intends to enhance the diversity of its faculty members.

People with disabilities who are equally as qualified as other applicants will receive preferential treatment.
