About us:

The vision of the The Bavarian AI Foundation Model Initiative (AI.BAY) is to build a comprehensive AI ecosystem for research, industry, startups, and the public in Bavaria, promoting transparency and broad acceptance of AI technologies to benefit the region. AI.BAY aims to develop versatile foundational models as a technological base for both academic and industrial applications. The initiative will build on the broad expertise in Bavaria across perception, robotics, biomedicine and health, and language and communication to develop and extend multimodal AI foundation models with capabilities such as reading, writing, seeing, hearing, touching, and acting.

Funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Science, AI.BAY is a long-term project led by Prof. Björn Ommer (LMU Munich) and Prof. Wolfram Burgard (TU Nuremberg), with support from the Bavarian AI Agency.

Managing Director (m/f/x)

in Munich

Your tasks and responsibilities:

As Managing Director (TV-L E14 or higher, 100%), you will lead AI.BAY, managing the team,  overseeing the efforts across multiple Bavarian research institutions, and coordinating between the different stakeholders.

You will be situated at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU), one of Europe’s leading universities renowned for its academic excellence and research. Here you will be part of the research group of Prof. Dr. Björn Ommer, head of the Computer Vision & Learning Group at LMU, who serves as an academic project lead of the initiative.

Your key responsibilities:

  • Management of the initiative: Executive Management and Central Project Management.
  • Coordination of resources: Overseeing the alignment of budget, computing resources, and personnel, while coordinating the work of dedicated specialists in each area.
  • Communication: Ensuring efficient workflows between all members of the initiative and with external academic and industrial collaboration partners. Drive press relations, public outreach, and contacts to politics.
  • Networking: Build and maintain collaborations with researchers and industry partners, represent the foundation model initiative at meetings and events.
  • Administration: Oversee the scientific progress of the projects and regular reports (planning, organization, and coordination).
  • Budget: Responsibility for the funding management, and reporting to the Bavarian State Ministry of Science.
  • Research Integrity: Ensure compliance with ethical standards and regulations, promote transparency in research and development.

Your qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent experience in computer science, natural sciences or engineering.
  • Leadership experience in science management or interdisciplinary research projects, such as Collaborative Research Centers, Excellence Clusters.
  • Outstanding communication and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of budget planning and project management.
  • Proficiency in both English and German.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team of scientific experts.
  • Understanding of research integrity, understanding of ethical and regulatory standards.
