About us:

The Art History Department at LMU Munich is one of the largest art historical teaching and research institutions in the German-speaking world, covering periods from the Middle Ages to the present. Research focuses include European, North American, and Islamic art, as well as questions of their global interconnections. The Art History Department at LMU hosts several major third-party funded projects. It cooperates closely with the Central Institute for Art History Munich and other art and cultural institutions in Munich and beyond.

The DFG-funded project (directed by Prof. Dr. Joanna Olchawa) is dedicated, on the one hand, to the study of European pulpits in the triadic understanding of seeing, hearing, and speaking, and on the other hand, aims to establish a new methodological approach, a 'Sound Art History'. This includes analyses of audiovisual interdependencies, as well as medialization strategies of the voice and other sounds (including music, noises, signals). This art historical approach should - beyond pulpits - be opened up for other applications and groups of works, and increase the visibility of art historical research within interdisciplinary Sound History / Sound Studies.

We are looking for you:
