About us:

The Institute of Indology and Tibetology at the Department of Asian Studies (Faculty for the Study of Culture), Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich, is a major hub of learning and research in the fields of Indian and Tibetan Studies. With three professorships and over twenty members, the Institute boasts a broad expertise in the languages, literatures, religions and philosophies of South Asia and Tibet.

We are looking for you:

Postdoctoral Researcher in the History of Art and Archeology of South Asia (m/f/x)

in Munich

Your tasks and responsibilities:

  • Develop an ambitious research project in your field of expertise and maintain a strong publication record.
  • Develop initiatives to strengthen the field of Indian Art and Archeology at LMU.
  • Develop and teach lectures and seminars on the visual arts and material culture of Classical and/or Medieval South Asia for students enrolled in the BA and MA programmes.
  • Contribute to the Doctoral Programme in Buddhist Studies and to other initiatives in the field of Buddhist Studies.
  • Advise students.
  • Contribute to fostering interdisciplinarity within and beyond the Institute.
  • Assist the Chair of Classical Indology in the organization of research events.
  • Carry out administrative tasks for the Institute.

Your qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree in Art History, Archaeology, Indology or a related field at the time of appointment.
  • Experience in the conception of object databases is desirable.
  • Fieldwork experience is desirable.
  • Excellent communication skills in English.


  • This is a full-time (100%) position (BesGr TV-L E13). The position is initially limited to two years, with a possibility of extension.
