The Institute of Indology and Tibetology at the Department of Asian Studies (Faculty for the Study of Culture), Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich, is a major hub of learning and research in the fields of Indian and Tibetan Studies. With three professorships and over twenty members, the Institute boasts a broad expertise in the languages, literatures, religions and philosophies of South Asia and Tibet.

We are looking for you:

Assistant Professor (Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter, Assistenz) in Indology and Buddhist Studies (m/f/x)

in Munich

Your tasks and responsibilities:

This is a full-time position commencing on 1st October 2023 (non-tenure track).

  • Develop an ambitious research project in your field, which may be formalized as a habilitation project.
  • Maintain a strong publication record and participate in international conferences.
  • Support the Chair of Classical Indology in research, teaching, and in advising students.
  • Carry out administrative tasks for the Chair and the Institute, in particular the study coordination of the BA program “Buddhistische und Südasiatische Studien.”
  • Develop and teach lectures and seminars on Indian languages, literature, and religions of Classical South Asia as well as on the methodology of Cultural Studies for students enrolled in the BA and MA programs (5 hours per week during the semester).
  • Contribute to the Doctoral Programme in Buddhist Studies and to other initiatives in the field of Indology and Buddhist Studies.
  • Assist the Chair of Classical Indology in the organization of research events.

Your qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree in Indology, Buddhist Studies, or related field at the time of appointment.
  • Excellent knowledge of Sanskrit is required. Additional language skills relevant to Classical Indology and Buddhist Studies would be an asset.
  • Firm grounding in the methods of history and philology and, if possible, familiarity with those of literary and/or religious studies.
  • Very good knowledge of German (B2 and above).
  • Excellent communication skills in English.


  • This is a full-time (100%) position (BesGr TV-L E13). The position is initially limited to two years, with a possibility of extension for a total of up to six years.
