About us:

The position is located at the chair Statistical Learning and Data Science, which is part of the department of statistics at the LMU Munich. The chair is led by Prof. Dr. Bernd Bischl, who has been conducting research on automated machine learning and hyperparameter optimization for more than ten years. You will be part of an energetic chair that fosters a supportive and inclusive work culture and that comprises two professors, six PostDocs and more than 15 PhD students. Currently, there are four PhD students working on AutoML with whom you will be working together, and we are closely collaborating with other groups working on AutoML at the LMU, and with other groups at the department of statistics. The LMU Munich is constantly ranked as one of the best universities in Germany (source) and is part of the Munich Center for Machine Learning (MCML), one of Germany’s five AI competence centers (where Prof. Bernd Bischl is also director).

PhD Position in Automated Machine Learning (m/f/x)

in Munich

Your tasks and responsibilities:

We are looking for a PhD student to join the Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) and Optimization research group, which is part of the chair Statistical Learning and Data Science at the LMU. The main research will focus on the advancement of automated machine learning and the outcome of the PhD will impact the way we design and test new machine learning algorithms in the future, reducing time and compute effort, while leading to better and more reliable results.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Conduct exciting research on automated machine learning
  • Publish your results in internationally renowned journals (JMLR, MLJ, JAIR, TMLR, etc.) and conferences (ICML, ICLR, NeurIPS, AutoML, KDD, etc.)
  • Collaborate with fellow researchers, actively contributing to research projects and/or open-source software projects. We encourage collaboration with other research groups of the chair, for example, the interpretable machine learning group
  • Assist in teaching tasks and the development of course material for machine learning-related classes at the LMU Munich such as automated machine learning.

Your qualifications:

  • M.Sc. in statistics, mathematics, data science, computer science, or related discipline
  • Strong knowledge of machine learning is essential, demonstrated for example via good grades in more than one lecture on machine learning
  • Proficient programming skills in R and/or Python
  • Proficient in both spoken and written English, with strong communication skills
  • (Optional) Knowledge or experience in automated machine learning
  • (Optional) A basic understanding of German is a plus.
