We are seeking applications from enthusiastic early-career researchers for the position of scientific assistant (Wissenschaftlicher Assistent/Akademischer Rat auf Zeit = non-tenured “Assistant Professor”).

Scientific Assistant in Experimental Geomaterials Science (Akademischer Rat auf Zeit) (m/f/x)

in Munich

Your tasks and responsibilities:

The successful candidate will develop their own research projects and is expected to acquire third-party funding that complements the thematic focus of the working group: molecular and electronic structure, physical and thermodynamic properties and interactions of minerals, melts and glasses as well as hydrothermal fluids up to high pressures and temperatures. You will also support the Chair of Interactions of Geomaterials and Living Organisms in research and teaching and are required to teach courses in the fields of mineralogy and crystallography in the Bachelor's degree program in Geosciences, in the International Master's degree program “Geomaterials & Geochemistry” and in the ERASMUS Mundus Master’s degree program “MaMaSELF” for five hours/week during the semester. Collaboration in academic self-administration is also expected.

Your qualifications:

The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in Geosciences, Physics, Chemistry or Materials Science and a proven record of excellent research. At least one or two years of postdoctoral experience, preferably abroad, is beneficial. Previous experience in synthesis and/or characterization of (geo)materials is required. Practical knowledge in X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and spectroscopic methods, or experiments with diamond anvil cells is desirable.You are committed, independent and reliable and have very good command of written and spoken English. Most of the teaching at Bachelor level will be in German, so a successful applicant whose native language is not German will be prepared to acquire sufficient German language skills for teaching within the first 24 months.

Benefits:

This position is non-tenured and can initially be filled for up to six years. After successful completion of the habilitation an extension of a further two years is possible. The salary is in accordance with the German public service salary group A13 (Akademischer Rat auf Zeit).
