Professorship (W2) (6 years/tenure track) of Economic Geology

The Faculty of Geosciences invites applications for a Professorship (W2) (6 years/tenure track) of Economic Geology commencing on 1 October 2026.

The professorship in Economic Geology is intended to further strengthen the Faculty of Geosciences in the field of Earth and Environmental Sciences. Applicants are expected to conduct innovative and internationally visible research activities focused on geological processes and systems that bear on the distribution, characteristics and formation of geogenic mineral resources.

Strong links to the working groups of the Faculty of Geosciences, especially Geology, the working groups of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Physical Geography, the Munich GeoCenter and the GeoBio-Center of LMU Munich are desired. The establishment of an internationally competitive, third-party funded research program is expected, as well as publishing in relevant, peer-reviewed scientific journals and participating in academic self-administration. With respect to teaching, the discipline of Economic Geology must be covered fully in the bachelor's degree program Geosciences and in the master’s degree programs at the Munich GeoCenter. The candidate should complement the teaching profile of the other professorships in terms of content and methods. The courses are jointly offered by LMU Munich and the Technical University of Munich.

The Faculty of Geosciences is located in the center of Munich, and there are excellent networking opportunities at the science location Munich. Modern analytical laboratories, large-scale equipment and computer networks are available at the Faculty of Geosciences, at the Munich GeoCenter and at the GeoBio-Center.

LMU Munich seeks to appoint a highly qualified junior academic to this professorship and, therefore, especially encourages early-career scholars to apply. Prerequisites for this position are a university degree and a doctoral degree or a comparable specific qualification. With an excellent record in research and teaching to date, prospective candidates will have demonstrated the potential for an outstanding academic career.

The initial appointment will be for six years. After a minimum of three years, it can be converted into a permanent position pending a positive evaluation of the candidate’s performance in research and teaching as well as his or her personal aptitude and if all legal conditions are met.

Under the terms of the “LMU Academic Career Program”, in exceptional cases and subject to outstanding performance in research and teaching, the position may be converted from a W2 into a W3 Full Professorship at a later date.
