About us:

The GeoComputing group at the Geophysics section of the Dept. of Earth and Environmental Sciences is concerned with design, implementation and optimisation of simulation codes for high-performance computing to solve geophysical research questions. We investigate associated numerical techniques and the 3D visualisation of resulting datasets.

We are looking for you:

PhD / PostDoc position in GeoComputing / HPC (m/f/x)

in Munich

Your tasks and responsibilities:

As part of the project Multi-physics Simulation for Geodynamics on Heterogeneous Exa-scale Systems (CoMPS) funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research you will work on :

  • simulation of convection in the Earth’s mantle using finite element and particle methods
  • the development and efficient implementation of (matrix-free) numerical methods in the open source framework HyTeG
  • designing geodynamic benchmark simulations and executing them on high-performance supercomputers
  • dealing with uncertainties in models and data

Your qualifications:

  • holder of a master’s degree in Computational Science and Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, (Geo)Physics or a neighbouring discipline
  • very good programming skills in a language such as Fortran, C, C++ or Julia (preferably C++, as this will be the language used)
  • solid knowledge of numerical methods (experience with finite element techniques is a plus, but no essential requirement)
  • excellent mastery of written and spoken English
  • experience with either or both of the following is beneficial: computational fluid dynamics, parallel simulation

The position is a full-time TV-L E13 position limited to a maximum of 3 years.
